  3.                      WPD Files for QMS PostScript Printers
  4.  
  5.  This disk contains WPD files for most QMS PostScript printers. These files 
  6. will allow you to add a particular QMS printer to the list of supported 
  7. printers in any Windows PostScript driver based on the original Microsoft
  8. driver which supported the addition of printers through WPD files. The
  9. following drivers provide this support:
  10.  
  11.   Microsoft V3.3
  12.   Microsoft V3.4
  13.   Microsoft V3.5
  14.   Aldus V3.4a
  15.   QMS V1.0
  16.   QMS V1.1
  17.   QMS V1.2
  18.   QMS V1.3
  19.   QMS V1.4
  20.   QMS V2.1X

  22. NOTE: 
  23.   The QMS PostScript driver for Windows 3.x already supports all QMS 
  24.   printers. It is available from the QMS Bulletin Board at (205) 633-3632  
  25.   or in the QMS section of the DTPVEN forum on Compuserve. Unless you have 
  26.   a particular reason for keeping your current driver and adding printers, 
  27.   it is probably better to just use the QMS driver.
  28.  
  29.   The format of the WPD file was modified a bit for Windows 3.1. Therefore,
  30.   this disk contains WPD files for Windows 3.0 and 3.1.
  31.

  33. To add printers using WPD files follow these steps:
  34.  
  35. 1) In Windows, at the Program Manager dialog box, double click on the Control
  36.    Panel icon.
  37.  
  38. 2) In the Control Panel dialog box, double click on the Printers icon.
  39.  
  40. 3) Click on your PostScript driver entry in the Installed Printers list and 
  41.    then click on Configure (for Windows 3.1 click on Setup and proceed to
  42.    Step #5).
  43.  
  44. 4) In the Configure dialog box, click on Setup.
  45.  
  46. 5) In the Setup dialog box, click on Add Printer.
  47.  
  48. 6) You will be prompted to insert a disk into drive A. If you are using drive
  49.    A, insert the disk containing the WPD files into that drive. If you are 
  50.    using another drive, type in the appropriate drive name and insert the disk 
  51.    there. Add the path name "\WPDS\QMS" and "\WIN30" or "\WIN31".
  52.    (ex. b:\wpds\qms\win31). Click on OK.
  53.  
  54. 7) Click on the desired QMS printer and Click on Add to install the printer. 
  55.    
  56.    You may add up to 5 external printers to most drivers. See the Removing 
  57.    External Printers section of this document if you need to remove a printer 
  58.    to make room for others.
  59.  
  60.    Excluding the QMS driver, most PostScript drivers for Windows 3.x do not 
  61.    provide support for all the fonts resident in some QMS printers. Check the
  62.    section "Installing Softfonts" to see if this applies to the printer you
  63.    have added.

  65. 8) Click on Done.
  66.  
  67. 9) Select the QMS printer you just added in the Printer list and set the 
  68.    desired paper source and size. QMS printers added with WPD files have
  69.    "<<<" appended to the printer name.
  70.  
  71. 10) Click on OK through all subsequent screens to exit. Close the Control 
  72.     Panel dialog box and exit Windows to insure that your changes take effect.

  75. The QMS printer has been added to the list of printers supported by your 
  76. driver as an external printer.

  80. Installing Softfonts
  81. --------------------

  83.  A printer font metrics file (PFM file) is included on the diskettes for each
  84. of the fonts resident in QMS printers that is not normally supported by other
  85. printer drivers.
  86.  
  87. Follow these steps to install the PFM files:
  88.  
  89. 1) Copy all PFM files to your windows directory
  90.  
  91.     For QMS-PS 410, QMS-PS 815, QMS-PS 825, QMS-PS 1700, QMS-PS 2000 
  92.         or QMS-PS 3200:
  93.         COPY A:\WPDS\QMS\PFM\AG\*.PFM C:\WINDOWS
  94.  
  95.     For QMS ColorScript 210, or QMS ColorScript 230:
  96.         COPY A:\WPDS\QMS\PFM\65\*.PFM C:\WINDOWS
  97.  
  98. 2) Make a backup copy of the WIN.INI file in your windows directory.
  99.    Edit the WIN.INI file with an ASCII text editor.
  100.  
  101. 3) Search for the [fonts] entry containing a list of printer fonts with
  102.    the following format.
  103.  
  104. [fonts]
  105. fontname=PFM file name
  106. fontname=PFM file name
  107. fontname=PFM file name
  108. fontname=PFM file name
  109.  
  110. 4) Add the following entries for additional fonts.
  111.  
  112.     For QMS-PS 410, QMS-PS 815, QMS-PS 825, QMS-PS 1700, QMS-PS 2000 
  113.         or QMS-PS 3200:

  152. 5) Update each PostScript printer entry in the WIN.INI with references to the 
  153.    additional fonts. These entries have the following format.

  157.    xxxx can be LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, FILE, etc.

  159. 6) In each PostScript printer entry, add the softfont entries.

  161.     For QMS-PS 410, QMS-PS 815, QMS-PS 825, QMS-PS 1700, QMS-PS 2000
  162.         or QMS-PS 3200:

  203.    The "softfont?=??????" entries must be numbered in consecutive order and 
  204.    the "softfonts=?" value must be equal to the number of "softfont?=?????"
  205.    entries.

  208. EXAMPLE: The following example shows a typical printer entry before and after 
  209. adding the new softfont entries for Adobe Garamond Softfonts.

  233. Removing External Printers
  234. -----------------------------------

  236.  Most Windows 3.x PostScript drivers only allow you to add up to 5 external 
  237. printers with WPD files. If you have already added 5 external printers and 
  238. need to install a different printer, you must remove a previously installed 
  239. external printer. 
  240.  
  241. Follow these steps to remove an external printer:
  242.  
  243. 1) Make a backup copy of the WIN.INI file in your windows directory.
  244.    Edit the WIN.INI file with an ASCII text editor.
  245.  
  246. 2) Search for a [PSCRIPT] entry containing a list of external printers with 
  247.    the following format.
  248.  
  249. [PSCRIPT]
  250. External Printers=5
  251. printer1=qps2000
  252. printer2=qps2220
  253. printer3=qps825
  254. printer4=qps410
  255. printer5=qps820
  256.  
  257. 3) Remove individual printers by deleting "printer?=??????" lines. Renumber 
  258.    the "printer?=??????" entries so that they are consecutive.
  259.  
  260. 4) Change the number of printers indicated in the "External Printers=?" entry.
  261.    The value in this entry must equal the number of "printer?=?????" entries.

  285. PPD Files On This Disk
  286. ----------------------

  288.  Some printer drivers read PPD (PostScript Printer Description) files to
  289. determine a printer's capablilities. The supplied PPD files (in the PPD40
  290. subdirectory) are intended for those drivers. Use the instructions provided
  291. with the driver for information about how to use these PPD files.
